Description and research notes

Issued fifty francs note of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg dated 1972, representing the Signature B configuration as cataloged under Pick 55b. This variant forms the second signature type within the final circulating series and is distinguished by a change in the left-side issuing authority signature while retaining continuity in the right-side ministerial signature.

The obverse features the engraved portrait of Grand Duke Jean, positioned within an intricate multicolor guilloche structure composed of layered geometric forms in green, orange, and brown tones. The denomination CINQUANTE FRANCS is prominently centered, with the issuing authority LA CAISSE GÉNÉRALE DE L'ÉTAT printed below. Serial number D813992 appears in red at upper left and lower right, consistent with standard production layout.

The Signature B configuration consists of Corneille Brück at left, representing the issuing authority, paired with Pierre Werner at right, serving as Ministre d'État. This combination defines the Pick 55b subtype and distinguishes it from the earlier Signature A pairing of Marcel Schmit and Pierre Werner.

The Signature B configuration reflects a change in ministerial title, with Pierre Werner appearing as Ministre d'État rather than Ministre des Finances as seen in the earlier Signature A issues.

The reverse presents the industrial vignette emblematic of Luxembourg’s economic identity during the period, executed in fine engraved detail with balanced composition and precise line work. The design reflects the finalized production state following earlier photographic proofs and experimental stages.

This example is preserved in Superb Gem Uncirculated condition with Exceptional Paper Quality, retaining full original paper integrity, sharp embossing, and vivid color saturation.

According to current PMG population data, this grade represents the highest certified level for this type, with no examples recorded in higher grades, placing this note at the absolute top of the population census for Pick 55b.

Within the full developmental and issued sequence of the Luxembourg fifty francs series, this note represents the completed circulation form of the Signature B branch, providing a direct counterpart to the Signature A issue and completing the dual-signature structure of the denomination.
