Description and research notes
Specimen of the fifty francs note of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, dated 1972 and representing the Signature B configuration, officially cataloged as Pick 55bs. This example reflects the finalized production design prepared for institutional reference, distribution control, and archival purposes.
The note carries serial number D000000 in dual placement and is overprinted SPECIMEN in red across the face. Two circular punch holes are present across the central field, consistent with specimen handling and cancellation practices.
The portrait of Grand Duke Jean is fully engraved and integrated within a complex multicolor guilloche structure, demonstrating the completed artistic and technical execution of the series. Typography, denomination placement, and ornamental framework are fully stabilized and aligned with the issued format.
The signature configuration corresponds to the Signature B system, with signatures of Corneille Brück (left) and Pierre Werner (right), later cataloged as Pick 55b.
The Signature B configuration reflects a change in ministerial title, with Pierre Werner appearing as Ministre d'État rather than Ministre des Finances as seen in the earlier Signature A issues.
The reverse design corresponds to the fully developed industrial composition used in the issued series, completing the integrated visual program of the note.
Within the broader Luxembourg collection, this piece represents the finalized specimen stage of the Signature B branch, following the photographic proof and color trial phases and preceding full circulation release.
The note is preserved in Gem Uncirculated condition with Exceptional Paper Quality, retaining full color integrity, sharp detail, and complete specimen characteristics.
