Description and research notes
Issued fifty francs note of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg dated 1972, representing the Signature A configuration as cataloged under Pick 55a. This note belongs to the finalized circulating series featuring Grand Duke Jean and reflects the fully executed design following earlier proof and specimen stages.
The obverse presents a detailed engraved portrait of Grand Duke Jean, integrated within a complex multicolor guilloche field composed of interwoven geometric patterns in green, orange, and brown tones. The denomination CINQUANTE FRANCS is centrally positioned, with the issuing authority LA CAISSE GÉNÉRALE DE L'ÉTAT clearly indicated beneath. Dual serial numbers C176655 appear in red at upper left and lower right, consistent with standard production format.
The signature configuration corresponds to Signature A, featuring Marcel Schmit at left (Caisse Générale de l’État) and Pierre Werner at right (Ministre des Finances). This pairing defines the A-type issue within the fifty francs series and distinguishes it from the later Signature B configuration.
The reverse displays the industrial-themed vignette characteristic of this denomination, representing Luxembourg’s modern economic identity during the period. The composition is executed with fine line engraving and balanced spatial arrangement, consistent with the final production layout.
This example is preserved in Gem Uncirculated condition with Exceptional Paper Quality, retaining full original paper integrity, sharp embossing, and vibrant color fidelity.
Within the full developmental sequence of the Luxembourg fifty francs issue, this note represents the completed circulation form of the Signature A branch, following photographic proofs and color trial stages and preceding the alternate Signature B variant.
