Description and research notes

This 20 Centesimos note was issued by the Banco Nacional de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay under the monetary framework established on 25 de Agosto de 1887, during a formative period in the consolidation of Uruguay’s national banking authority. Printed in London by Waterlow & Sons, it represents the earliest hand-signed emission phase of the type and corresponds to Pick A88a.

The Banco Nacional operated as a principal instrument of monetary stabilization in late nineteenth-century Uruguay, issuing notes convertible into metallic reserves within a structured commercial banking system. The 20 Centesimos denomination occupied the lower fractional tier of the emission structure, facilitating everyday transactions while maintaining formal engraved security features equal in sophistication to higher denominations.

The obverse presents the seated Mercury allegory at left, symbolizing commerce and circulation, rendered in refined intaglio engraving typical of Waterlow export contracts. At right, the national coat of arms asserts sovereign authority within an ornate guilloche frame. The layered green and black linework demonstrates late Victorian security printing discipline, combining ornamental density with clear denomination hierarchy.

Serial A029393 belongs to the early A-prefix distribution associated with Montevideo circulation. The signatures of Vittone, Bugliam, and Giménez are individually executed in ink, displaying natural variation in stroke pressure and alignment. This manual signature application defines the A88a classification and distinguishes it from later mechanically reproduced signature formats.

The reverse consists of a dense green guilloche security field enclosing denomination panels, engraved with the precision and symmetry characteristic of Waterlow & Sons production of the 1880s. The fibrous matte paper stock and balanced ink saturation remain consistent with first-phase deliveries of the 1887 issue.

As an early hand-signed emission, this example documents the initial circulation stage of the Banco Nacional 20 Centesimos series before signature reproduction methods evolved. It stands as a primary artifact of Uruguay’s transition toward structured national banking and standardized engraved currency during the late nineteenth century.
