Australia 1890 Bank of New South Wales £10 Melbourne Circular Note specimen, 18__ form with perforated SPECIMEN, large BANK OF NEW SOUTH WALES ornamental watermark, reverse London demand draft, Pick Unlisted, R9 Extremely Rare, unique

Australia 1890 - Bank of New South Wales £10 Melbourne Circular Note Specimen (Pick Unlisted)

The Melbourne specimen therefore preserves both sides of the complete financial instrument: the face authorization addressed to correspondent bankers and the reverse demand draft drawn on the bank's London office. Its branch designation, 18__ date format, large institutional watermark, yellow-gold security underprint, blue-bordered paper, Letter of Indication procedure, and perforated specimen control document the working structure of a late 19th-century Bank of New South Wales circular note. Pick Unlisted, this exact Melbourne £10 specimen form is recorded as R9 Extremely Rare and Unique. Read more →

New Zealand 1905-1916 - Bank of New Zealand £1 Red with Serial Number Prefix G100001-G300000 Cancelled Perforation Specimen (Pick S212bs)

This cancelled variant represents the second major production block of the BNZ £1 Red sequence. Surviving examples from this middle G-prefix range are scarcer than the opening block and provide critical evidence of how Bradbury Wilkinson structured its production ranges during late-WWI contracts. New Zealand ND 1924-1933 Bank of New South Wales ten shillings proof printed by Charles Skipper and East, perforated SPECIMEN control marking, single sided with blank reverse

New Zealand ND (1924-1933) - Bank of New South Wales Ten Shillings with Perforated SPECIMEN Printers Archival Proof (Pick S161s)

Survival context is equally important. This design is not known in issued form, and no circulation notes exist for the 1924-1933 Ten Shillings under this lineage. All recorded examples are proofs bearing printer applied SPECIMEN markings. Certified population data indicates only a small surviving group, emphasizing that this proof does not represent a withdrawn issue but rather the only surviving manifestation of the design itself. Argentina 1884 El Banco del Chaco 1 Peso Moneda Nacional Oro, Serial 05056, corner-missing example

Argentina 1884 - El Banco del Chaco 1 Peso Moneda Nacional Oro Serial 05056 (Pick S1566)

Unlike high-grade examples from Buenos Aires, northern provincial notes almost never survive intact because the region lacked strong archival institutions. Political instability, bank reorganizations, periodic flooding, and tropical climate ensured that 99.9% of these early issues were destroyed. A fragment is not a flaw-it is evidence. Evidence that the note was part of the real economy, not a boardroom ornament. Evidence that it passed through human hands and frontier markets instead of resting untouched in a London drawer. Paraguay 1907 100 Pesos Banco de la República note with 1912 Emisión del Estado state overprint on the face, Pick 134, base Pick 159, printed by Waterlow & Sons, London, PMG 65 EPQ Gem Uncirculated Top Pop

Paraguay 1907 - 100 Pesos with 1912 State Overprint (Pick 134, Base Pick 159)

This certified example is especially important because issued 1912 overprint notes normally survived in circulated condition. High-denomination emergency paper was not produced for collectors; it was made to solve an immediate fiscal problem and was expected to work in the economy. Most examples were handled, redeemed, withdrawn, damaged, or lost. A PMG 65 EPQ Gem Uncirculated survivor with original paper quality is therefore extraordinary. The grade places this note at the very top level of preservation for the type, and the EPQ designation confirms the exceptional originality of the paper surface. Read more →

Great Britain ca. 1904 Thomas Cook and Son 50 Dollars Circular Note photographic proof mounted on card stock with signature field and engraved security background

Great Britain 1904 - Thomas Cook & Son $50 Circular Note Photographic Proof (Pick Unlisted)

Unlike circulating banknotes, Circular Notes were not intended to pass from hand to hand as money. They were single-use financial documents tied to a specific holder, redeemed through controlled channels, and typically withdrawn or destroyed after payment. This functional distinction places them at the intersection of banknote design, financial instruments, and early global payment infrastructure. Read more →

Poland 1940 500 Złotych Series A with counterfeit numbering link, PMG 15

Poland 1940 - 500 Zlotych, Series A with Counterfeit Numbering Issued Note (Pick 98a)

Original 500 złotych note of 1 March 1940 issued by the Bank Emisyjny w Polsce, Series A, serial A 1319803. Although the banknote itself is genuine, its serial falls within the 13xxxxx numbering range later associated with diversionary forgeries of the 500 złotych denomination. Together with the 12xxxxx sequence, these numbers became compromised by the appearance of counterfeit notes, making A 1319803 an extremely rare surviving original from a range subsequently targeted for withdrawal.
