Description and research notes

Photographic proof of the reverse of the one hundred francs note of Banque Internationale à Luxembourg S.A., representing the finalized back design stage prior to full circulation printing. Produced in monochrome, this proof preserves the reverse layout in a production-ready state, including both compositional structure and serial placement logic.

The reverse is dominated by a structured industrial tableau featuring workers, machinery, and architectural elements arranged in a balanced engraved composition. The vignette expresses labor, industry, and economic reconstruction, themes central to mid-twentieth-century Luxembourg banknote design. The line work is controlled and mature, with no evidence of the softer developmental character seen in the earlier 1951 multi-stage proof assembly.

Denomination inscriptions and issuer text are fully embedded within the ornamental framework, confirming that the reverse had reached a complete and stable design state by the time this proof was prepared. The proof also includes the serial number positions used in the issued note, but instead of finalized numbers, both positions are filled with placeholder numerals "123456" without alphabetic prefixes. This establishes the proof as a late production-stage reference, where numbering logic had already been fixed but variable data had not yet been assigned.

Unlike the issued note, whose reverse carries two different completed serial numbers in separate positions, this proof uses identical placeholder numerals as a functional stand-in during pre-print verification. Their presence is a critical technical feature and demonstrates that the proof was intended not merely for artistic review but for production control.

This finalized reverse stage follows the earlier 1951 design development material, where the broad compositional direction had already been explored in less resolved form. By 1956, the reverse had matured into the fully coherent industrial design seen here.

As a photographic proof, this piece served internal review and verification functions within the printing process and was never intended for circulation. Surviving examples are scarce and provide direct documentation of how the reverse moved from design concept into production-ready execution.
