Description and research notes
Specimen of the 50 Pesos dated 22 January 1939, reauthorized for Banco Central del Uruguay under the ND 1967 release. Printed by Thomas De La Rue with unchanged design and updated issuer legend. Serial D 000000-2, watermark J. Artigas. This note displays red SPECIMEN overprint and De La Rue oval control stamps, matching the format of the 1939 Series C proof but reissued under the new Central Bank charter.
Design: unchanged indigenous warrior portrait and assembly reverse from the prewar 1939 issue, now credited to Banco Central instead of the Departamento de Emision. The note retains full prewar color depth and engraving style, demonstrating the continuity of Uruguayan note design well into the 1960s.
Importance: shows how Uruguay’s monetary authority transitioned from Banco de la Republica to Banco Central while continuing the same De La Rue plate work. Specimens of this ND 1967 authorization are scarce and serve as official bridging proofs between two issuing institutions.
