Paraguay’s early twentieth-century paper money documents a period of provisional finance: base notes printed in 1907 were pushed back into service with bold 1912 state overprints while the monetary framework was being adjusted. Rather than wait for a full redesign, the treasury validated value with official ovals and legends — a practical, auditable fix that left a distinctive typographic footprint.

For collectors, two complementary lanes tell this story. Specimens preserve the surcharge tools in plate-true form — ink tone, alignment and penetration as approved — while issued notes show how the same devices performed in the field. On Pick 159 bases the “Emisión del Estado — 11 de Enero de 1912” treatment is diagnostic, and high-grade survivors are scarce because most examples saw heavy circulation.
