Paraguay’s early twentieth-century paper money documents a period of provisional finance: base notes printed in 1907 were pushed back into service with bold 1912 state overprints while the monetary framework was being adjusted. Rather than wait for a full redesign, the treasury validated value with official ovals and legends — a practical, auditable fix that left a distinctive typographic footprint.

For collectors, two complementary lanes tell this story. Specimens preserve the surcharge tools in plate-true form — ink tone, alignment and penetration as approved — while issued notes show how the same devices performed in the field. On Pick 159 bases the “Emisión del Estado — 11 de Enero de 1912” treatment is diagnostic, and high-grade survivors are scarce because most examples saw heavy circulation.

The selections below sample both lanes without repeating card-level details. Use the filters above to pivot by type or year as the Paraguay section expands with further provisional issues and supporting printer material that map this short but decisive overprint era.

Paraguay 1907 — 100 Pesos with 1912 Dual-Side Overprint (Specimen)

Archival specimen of the 1907 Banco de la República 100 Pesos (base Pick 159) carrying the fiscal overprint 'Emisión del Estado – 11 de Enero de 1912' not only on the face but also on the reverse. This dual-side application is extremely unusual for Paraguayan emergency issues and is absent from the standard Pick 134 state overprints. The reverse bears an additional departmental validation 'Departamento de Hacienda – Junta Fiscalizadora', applied in heavy black ink per the decree of 20 May 1912. ... Read more →

Paraguay 1907 — 100 Pesos with 1912 State Overprint

Provisional issue created on base Pick 159 during Paraguay’s sweeping 1912 monetary reform. The bold oval 'Emisión del Estado – 11 de Enero de 1912' was applied in official black ink to validate existing 1907 stock. These overprints served as stop-gap currency while new designs were prepared, making them both historically and fiscally important. ... Read more →

Paraguay 1907 — Banco de la República 100 Pesos (Pick 159, Issued)

Issued 100 Pesos note of the Banco de la República, catalogued as Pick 159 and printed by Waterlow & Sons, London. It shows the full design as originally released in 1907, featuring the central building vignette, elaborate guilloche, and watermark '100'. This is the parent design upon which the later 1912 fiscal overprints were imposed, making it the foundation type for both specimen and provisional issues. ... Read more →
