Description and research notes

This specimen represents an archival control note of the Banco de Londres y Rio de la Plata 10 Pesos issue prepared for the Rosario branch, dated Rosario, 10 de Noviembre de 1871, and printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Company in London. It was produced as part of the bank internal authorization and registration process for provincial issues and was never intended for circulation.

The Banco de Londres y Rio de la Plata, incorporated in London in 1862, operated as a British controlled private bank with branches in Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Rosario, and Montevideo. The Rosario branch, established in 1867, functioned within a rapidly expanding grain export and river trade corridor, while operating under persistent tension with provincial authorities and competition from locally controlled institutions such as the Banco Provincial de Santa Fe.

The note bears the control serial number 000001, applied as an internal reference designation rather than as part of a circulating sequence. Such numbering was used for approval, registration, and correspondence between provincial offices and the London head office. Two circular punch cancellations confirm its non circulating status and archival function.

A handwritten pencil annotation appears at the upper left margin, consistent with nineteenth century office handling and dating to February 1872. This notation post dates the printed issue date and reflects routine administrative processing rather than later collector intervention.

The monetary context of early 1870s Argentina was fragmented, with multiple standards circulating simultaneously, including pesos bolivianos, pesos fuertes, reales, and private bank issues. Banco de Londres notes promised payment in moneda boliviana or its legal equivalent, positioning the bank as an intermediary within a complex multi standard environment rather than a unified national system.

The design combines national symbolism with British security engraving. The portrait of General Jose de San Martin anchors the note in Argentine identity, while the surrounding border architecture, denomination counters, and symmetrical layout reflect Bradbury Wilkinson early export style for Latin America, engineered for rapid recognition and trust in active commercial environments such as ports, warehouses, and trading houses.

Within the specimen category, this Rosario control note constitutes a singular archival artifact documenting the mechanics of provincial private banknote authorization in nineteenth century Argentina. Its significance lies in its role as direct evidence of how foreign banks structured, approved, and administered regional issues during a period of monetary fragmentation and economic transition.
