Description and research notes
Matched printer's proof pair for the Banco Agricola 5 Bolivianos issue of 1903, produced by the American Bank Note Company. The pair preserves both sides of the design at the production stage: a front progressive proof and a separate back proof, together documenting the complete visual program prepared for the denomination.
The front is especially important because it documents an intermediate stage of the printing process. The main engraved framework, denomination panels, institutional lettering, border work, and principal vignettes are already present, while the design still shows the layered character of progressive proofing. Three large red CANCELLED overprints are applied across the face, marking the piece as controlled non-issue production material and forming one of the most visually distinctive features of the proof.
The front design combines agricultural and institutional imagery. At upper center is a rural vignette with livestock and workers in a broad landscape, directly reflecting the bank's agricultural identity. At lower right appears a substantial neoclassical building, reinforcing the image of an established financial institution. Large 5 counters occupy the corners and lower left field, while dense ornamental borders and engraved lettering frame the composition. The wording "CINCO BOLIVIANOS" is placed prominently across the center.
The reverse is printed in green and carries its own fully developed composition. A large central agricultural scene shows working animals and figures in a rural setting, surrounded by elaborate guilloche, scrollwork, denomination medallions, and repeated 5 counters. The bank name, EL BANCO AGRICOLA, appears prominently above the central vignette, while CINCO BOLIVIANOS anchors the lower center.
Together, the two proofs show the complete visual program prepared for the 5 Bolivianos denomination. The pairing makes it possible to study the note as a full design rather than as an isolated side, including the relationship between the front's institutional and agricultural imagery and the reverse's more concentrated rural theme.
The American Bank Note Company imprint is visible along the lower margin of the front, linking the design directly to the New York security printer responsible for the engraving and production work. The fine line engraving, dense border construction, denomination counters, ornamental lettering, layered security patterns, and triple CANCELLED control overprint document both the artistic and administrative handling of the proof.
As a matched proof pair, the set documents both the artistic and technical stages behind the planned issue. The front progressive proof records the developing face design and its printer-applied control markings, while the back proof preserves the reverse in completed engraved form. Together they form a direct production record of the Banco Agricola 5 Bolivianos design and of ABNC's role in Bolivian banknote production at the beginning of the twentieth century.
