Description and research notes

Plate proof of the 1982 five hundred francs issue of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, representing the finalized engraving stage prior to specimen marking, color testing, or production handling. As the primary working denomination within the intended series, the 500 Francs proof defines the practical structure of the design before any production-layer modifications were introduced.

Printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Company, Limited, the note presents the complete design in its pure form, without overprints, serial numbering, or cancellation. The portrait of Grand Duchess Charlotte is rendered in precise intaglio engraving, supported by a dense guilloche framework and balanced ornamental layout. At this stage, the note functions as a reference standard, used to confirm engraving accuracy, spatial alignment, and readiness for transition into subsequent production phases.

The issue originates from Luxembourg’s contingency preparation during instability within the Belgian Luxembourg Economic Union in the early 1980s. The 500 Francs was intended to serve as a central circulation denomination within a potential independent currency structure, complementing the higher-value 1000 Francs.

Within the full structure of the series, this proof occupies the primary design stage for the working denomination. It precedes both the color trial phase, where palette variations were explored, and the specimen phase, where control markings and cancellations were applied. Together with the 1000 Francs proof, it establishes the complete engraved foundation of the unissued series.

Graded PMG 66 EPQ Gem Uncirculated, this example is Top Population 1 of 1, with no other graded examples recorded. As the sole certified proof of the core denomination within an unissued national issue, it stands as a critical reference point within Luxembourg’s modern monetary history.
