Description and research notes
Plate proof of the 1982 one thousand francs issue of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, representing the earliest finalized stage of the design before specimen marking, color testing, or production handling. As the highest denomination of the series, this proof captures the complete engraving program at its purest state—prior to overprints, serial application, or cancellation.
Printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Company, Limited, the note displays the full intaglio structure exactly as prepared for final production. The portrait of Grand Duchess Charlotte is rendered in sharp, uninterrupted engraving, surrounded by precise guilloche architecture and balanced ornamental framing. At this stage, the design exists as a controlled reference standard, used to verify engraving accuracy, layout integrity, and readiness for subsequent production phases.
Unlike specimens and color trials, this proof contains no specimen overprints, no serial numbering, and no physical cancellation. Its role is not to mark or invalidate, but to define. It establishes the exact visual and technical baseline from which all later stages—color trials, specimen formats, and potential circulation notes—are derived.
The historical context remains the same: Luxembourg’s contingency preparation during instability within the Belgian Luxembourg Economic Union. The 1000 Francs stood at the top of the intended denomination structure, and this proof represents the moment at which the design was fully resolved and ready to move into production. That transition ultimately never occurred, leaving proofs such as this as the earliest surviving evidence of the completed issue.
Within the full structure of the series, this proof occupies the primary position. It precedes the color trial phase, where palette variations were explored, and the specimen phase, where control markings and cancellations were applied. Together, these stages form a complete production chain—but this piece stands at the origin of that sequence.
Graded PMG 55 EPQ About Uncirculated, this example is Top Population 1 of 1, with no other graded examples recorded. As the sole certified proof of the highest denomination in an unissued national series, it represents a unique reference point within Luxembourg’s modern monetary history.
