Although dated 1 October 1938, the ticket entered circulation on 26 August 1939 during the nationwide mobilization and remained legal tender until 20 May 1940. A total of 12,430,000 examples were printed. Surviving production material, including unnumbered sheets, printing trials, circulation proofs without watermark, and other manufacturing-stage material, documents the complete production history of the issue beyond the released circulation notes. Designed by Ryszard Kleczewski and printed by the Polish Security Printing Works in Łódź, the note reflects the restrained yet functional security printing adopted during the immediate post-war reconstruction period. Although produced in a print run of approximately 152 million notes, surviving examples in exceptional condition are considerably less common due to the heavy circulation typical of low-denomination currency. The face is headed by a large THOMAS COOK & SON title extending across the upper central field. Beneath it appears the serial number No. 1163727 S at the left, the place of issue London in script at center, and a partially preprinted date field beginning with 19 at the right. The remaining date was intended to be completed when the instrument entered use, so the printed 19 does not establish the precise year of production. Immediately below, the principal title reads CIRCULAR NOTE FOR TWENTY POUNDS, with a large script £20 denomination positioned prominently at the right. Read more →

The main engraved design is framed by dense geometric work and finely developed guilloche structures characteristic of Bradbury Wilkinson's nineteenth-century security printing. A large portrait of Christopher Columbus appears at the left of the principal note, balanced by a standing child vignette at the right. Repeated numerical 10 devices, ornamental value cartouches, fine-line backgrounds, layered color printing, and carefully structured typography create a complex security composition built around denomination recognition, institutional authority, and anti-alteration engraving.
