New Zealand ND (1924-1933) - Bank of New South Wales Ten Shillings Oversized Proof, Perforated SPECIMEN (Pick S161s)

This proof is printed single sided in orange red intaglio on an oversized sheet with wide untrimmed margins and a completely blank reverse. The enlarged format was intentional. London security printers routinely pulled proofs on oversized paper to allow inspection of ink spread, plate pressure, line integrity, and margin balance before trimming dimensions were finalized. Such sheets were retained within the printers workshop and archive and were never intended for bank distribution. Read more →

This engraved Portrait of Woman intaglio vignette was produced by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co., London, and is directly connected to the City of Melbourne Bank Limited 20 Pounds specimen of 1877, where the same portrait appears as the principal vignette within the large ornamental panel at left. The proof preserves that portrait as a stand-alone engraved component before its integration into the complete banknote design.

As a front proof, the sheet carries no reverse impression and no serials, confirming its role as an approval and archival reference rather than a circulation or presentation item. Such proofs were produced in extremely small numbers and retained within De La Rue’s internal archives as part of the printer–central bank approval workflow.

Australia 1877 - Mercantile Bank of Sydney £1 Specimen (Pick Unlisted)

The Mercantile Bank of Sydney operated within Australia’s competitive pre-Federation private-bank system, where banks issued their own notes prior to the consolidation of authority under the Commonwealth in the early 20th century. Specimens from these institutions are extremely scarce, as most were kept in printer archives, lost through mergers, or destroyed when financial regulations tightened. No other examples of this £1 specimen have been found in PMG records, major Australian or international auction archives, or institutional collections.
