Mauritius 1940 - Government of Mauritius 1 Rupee Uncut Pair Remainder (Pick 26r1)

The left side of each note contains the coat of arms of Mauritius within a tall rectangular ornamental panel. The arms are supported by two distinctive animals closely associated with Mauritius: a dodo at left and a sambar deer at right. Between them is the quartered shield incorporating the principal heraldic devices of Mauritius, including a sailing ship, palm trees, a key and a star. Vegetal ornament rises above the shield, while the ribbon below carries the Latin motto STELLA CLAVISQUE MARIS INDICI, identifying Mauritius heraldically as the star and key of the Indian Ocean. The survival of the dodo as a heraldic supporter is particularly characteristic of Mauritian national imagery and gives the left panel an immediately recognizable local identity. Read more →

All four cheques share the large engraved left-side vignette featuring an obelisk, palm trees, a sphinx, and a pedestal listing the bank’s far-reaching branches across the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Africa. Beneath the vignette, the printer's line 'Société des Publications Égyptiennes, Alexandria' is visible on several examples. The cheques are numbered by hand at the upper left and completed in slanted fountain-pen script typical of the 1920s, with amounts stated both numerically and in longhand French. Read more →

The reverse of the fifty dollars denomination features a structured maritime composition centered on a Cayman domestic coastal residence framed by palm trees and shoreline elements. The architectural rendering is executed in layered linework that creates depth through tonal gradation rather than shading blocks, a characteristic De La Rue engraving approach. Surrounding cartouches, wave-pattern borders, and denomination panels are arranged symmetrically to stabilize the visual field and reinforce security through controlled repetition of line density. The broad open field at right, reserved for watermark visibility, contrasts deliberately with the denser engraved vignette at center, producing both aesthetic balance and functional authentication space.
