The ABNC proof aesthetic is immediately recognizable: deep intaglio linework; elegant guilloché borders; idealized allegorical portraits; and sharply modeled central vignettes. The equestrian scene symbolizes movement, energy, and Argentina’s frontier identity, while the portraits of Varela and Alsina highlight the political leadership that shaped Buenos Aires’s institutional development. These design choices were calculated to project stability, legitimacy, and modernity to a public still shaken by recurring bank crises and provincial–national political conflict.

The decision to place Tamati Waka Nene on the obverse marked a rare and forward-looking acknowledgment of Māori leadership at a time when indigenous representation on currency across the British Empire was almost nonexistent. His role as a stabilizing force during the early colonial period mirrored the note’s function: a unit of everyday exchange meant to circulate broadly among both Māori and Pākehā communities.

The obverse combines symbolic and cultural elements that helped define the visual identity of New Zealand’s new national currency. At left appears the kiwi, an iconic native bird that had already become a widely recognized national symbol. At center stands the coat of arms of New Zealand supported by allegorical figures representing agriculture and industry. At right appears the portrait of Tāwhiao, the second Māori King and leader of the King Movement, acknowledging the historical and cultural significance of Māori leadership in the country’s development.
