These two adhesives belong to the very first adhesive revenue issue ever used in Egypt. Before this period, all fiscal charges were paid on pre-embossed stamped paper; the introduction of gummed revenue stamps marked the start of a completely new system. Only the 1m and 2m values were produced during this initial experimental rollout, reflecting a short-lived transitional phase with inherently limited printing and distribution. Because early offices routinely discarded or destroyed processed paperwork, full documents from this first generation-especially those retaining multiple values used together as originally intended-survive at extremely low rates. To manage instalment contracts, Singer created proprietary fiscal stamps that acted as both receipts and internal control marks. Each payment required the customer to appear at a branch or authorised collector, where a Singer-branded adhesive would be affixed and cancelled in the instalment booklet, creating an auditable sequence of payments. These stamps functioned as a private company’s version of revenue stamps and were used across many colonial and semi-colonial markets. Cheques like this one passed through a complex clearing ecosystem involving correspondent banks, foreign exchange houses, and the Egyptian postal and telegraph systems. The face of the draft is completed in multiple inks. The header indicates a 250-piastre amount (B.P. 250) and is written to the order of Messieurs Chahine & Sbath with the recipient’s name, Ahmed El Serafi, filled in by hand in Arabic next to his address at Rue Madabegh, Immeuble Coronel. Large sweeping Arabic entries in black and blue fountain-pen ink extend across the center panel, including commercial notations, acceptance wording, and confirmation of goods received.
